After the fall of France in , Ophuls travelled throughout Europe, outpacing the encroaching Nazi threat and directing films in the Netherlands and Italy. He arrived in the United States in , where he struggled to find gainful employment despite having more than ten features to his credit, and despite the best efforts of supportive expatriates, like Robert Siodmak, and filmmaker admirers, like Preston Sturges, who arranged for Ophuls to direct Vendetta in , from which he was promptly removed with hardly any of his footage left intact that film finally premiered in Three other American films followed, all met with middling to poor receipts, but even as Ophuls returned to Paris in , he never gave up his Hollywood aspirations. Dec 27, , 2: I have worked on some rules to keep my reading focussed – supposedly only focusing on two books at a time for one, though that is out the window at present with 10 I’m giving to my currently reading collection, partly that is also due to a number of books I read a little of each day. But I will try to work towards that focus, it may mean I focus on two in a week. But also very much to focus more on those authors I really want to read, those that I feel most for in ways that mean I want to read them properly – and make up for lost time and also fill in those gaps.

I’m thinking about a ratio of books to finish and from shelves to read before I allow myself a new book or to read something else. But, as anyone that has ever followed one of my threads knows, I am not good at sticking to a plan for a year.

Bragdon’s work in these varied fields interrelated and overlapped, tied together by his theosophical belief in creating and communicating beauty. Bragdon’s arrival in the world of theater came at a time when significant changes in staging techniques were on the horizon. In the s, a new movement emerged in American theater. Designers and producers began to experiment with stage lighting and also revolutionized stage set designs. The movement was away from the previous tendency for ultra-realistic, painted stage sets and toward a more simple, three-dimensional set.

This New Stagecraft was the result of a desire to let the actual texts and language of the plays speak for themselves.

Continuum: The Australian Journal of Media & Culture Vol. 7, No. 2, a relatively minor novel dating from the period of Dick’s highest productivity, Flagg possesses a secret “super-power”, yet his is neither a function of strength nor speed, but of perception: he perceives the subliminal messages; his is the power to decode signs.

To those good people in Germany and elsewhere in the world who cared and who helped those on the run from murder. Though there is an enormous public interest in Nazism and the Holocaust, specialists in these fields often are all too aware of the difficulty of conveying the mood, the feel, the logic, which lay beneath the surface of the Third Reich. The problem is that these harmless English words do not convey the powerful emotional resonance—almost religious in its intensity—that the original terms carry in German culture.

In the eyes of its inventors, one of the triumphs of this new-speak of NaziDeutsch was to transform the traditional language of German antisemitism into something much more modern and suited to the twentieth century. Through this book a non-German speaker may begin to glimpse and even to experience the emotional rapture that possessed so many Germans exposed to the viii Foreword Nazi magic, an enchantment that was fortunately elusive to most of those living outside Germany.

As will be seen, that same newspeak was an indispensable accessory to the persecution and murder of the European Jews. Scattered through NaziDeutsch are to be found the numerous components, some old, some new, that impregnated and animated the new murderous Nazi antisemitism—those medical, religious, biological, economic, racial, cultural, and political components all have left their tedious impact on Nazi-Deutsch.

We have known too for a long time just how the SS and the bureaucrats of mass-murder concealed their arrangements in a web of metaphorical, ironic, sometimes half-humorous terms: Above all, there is the constant fluctuation in German antisemitic language between the metaphorical and the physical meaning of words that in English are concrete.

Share via Email There would probably be a film by Max Ophuls in my best 10 movies of all time, let alone my best It is not La Ronde, his most successful film, nor Lola Montes, the magnificent last work of a career that spanned 25 years and took in Germany, Italy and France as well as Hollywood. My favourite is the film preceding La Ronde – ‘s Madame De. The film is one of four he made towards the end of his life in France, which also included the less satisfactory but still impressive melodramas Caught and The Reckless Moment.

It encapsulates both his dazzling technique and the way it serves what looks like slight material. The story, taken from a novella by Louise de Vilmorin but translated by Ophuls into something more like Pirandello or Anna Karenina, revolves around a pair of earrings.

Beyond the Forest Whether Film Noir is a genre, a mood, a style or a movement in American crime films of the 40s and 50s seems irresolvable. In its stark examination of the influence of social and environmental factors on personal character, it hearkens back to the period of American naturalism, of Frank Norris and Theodore Dreiser rather than James M. All and sundry will eventually claim that Lucifer is synonymous with one Father Grandier, a charismatic priest and part-time theologian with a gluttonous taste for coitus. Why blame him for it? Savouring his role as an excitable vacationist in a garden of earthly delights, Grandier jovially surrenders to his carnal impulses, going so far as to reinterpret Catholic doctrine to justify his indulgence: This fantastically hedonistic adaptation of Christian morality is not without its perils, however: In an era defined by religious persecution, it is he alone who pleas for tolerance, urging Catholics and Protestants to live alongside one another in peace.
